Glossy Black Cockatoos & Future Food for Glossies (Tuesday, March 03, 2020)

Two speakers will be covering all things Glossy in this short evening program. Eric Anderson will introduce the elusive Glossy black-cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami lathami), listed as 'Vulnerable to extinction' under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. Eric will be followed by Janet Carew who will tell us about her project researching the identification of preferred feed trees, which include specific individuals of Forest she-oak (Allocasaurina torulosa). They will also give us some pointers on how we can help to support the conservation of the Glossy black in our area.

Join us to plant trees for the ‘Future food for Glossies research project’. We will be planting out Forest She-oaks propagated at the Barung Nursery from local seed, to increase the food source for the threatened Glossy Black-Cockatoo.

The weather is likely to be hot and we will be working on some steep sites in full sun, so please consider whether you want to be involved with digging holes and planting before registering.

Morning tea provided.

Car pool at the back of the IGA carpark in Maleny at 7am or travel independently (call 0448 447322 for directions) for a 7.30am start

All tools will be provided. Bring gloves, water, boots, sunscreen and insect repellent. Long-sleeved shirt, trousers and hat are essential (Work Place Health and Safety Regulations).

Platypus Walk & Talk on the Obi (Sunday, March 08, 2020)

Come along for an early morning walk and talk with Malenys' own Platypus Whisperer Neil Andison and (potentially) view some of the Obi's resident platypuses. Neil has been monitoring these critters for several years now and over that time has got to know a few individuals; he'd love you to make their acquaintance and get to know a bit more about them and where they live.

A Presentation on the Australian Native Plants Society Conference 2019 (Sunday, March 08, 2020)

Enjoy a presentation by Joan Dillon on the Australian Native Plants Society Conference 2019 held in October in Albany, W.A.

The conference themes were Know, Grow, and Conserve. Joan's presentation will focus on the "know" from an ecological perspective.

The event is free and morning tea will be provided.

Please arrive at 8.45am for a 9 am start at the Hinterland Business Centre, 38a Coral St, Maleny (downstairs in the conference room) on March 8th.

Join us to plant trees on this covenanted property in the Bridge Creek catchment. The landholders have done a great job of restoring vegetation over many years and the property is a key habitat link in the Lawley Creek corridor. The site is steep and slippery so consider this before registering.

Morning tea is provided.

Please meet at the back of the IGA carpark in Maleny at 7am for shared travel arrangements. The entrance is tricky to describe and there isn't much parking, so we need to share travel.

Join us to rake leaf and bark litter to protect trees and habitat logs from potential fire damage at Rainforest Lodge Nature Refuge. A hazard reduction burn will be undertaken after this event to reduce fuel loads that pose a safety risk, and to stimulate regeneration in fire-adapted dry sclerophyll species.

No weeding involved! But bring a heavy metal rake if you have one.
