About Us

Under the new federal arrangements for natural resource management, this headwaters location means that the Barung is working with two regional bodies:

  1. Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) for the headwaters of the Mary River
  2. South East Queensland Catchments (SEQ Catchments) for the headwaters of the Stanley River

With more than 750 members, Barung has now consolidated its reputation as one of the most successful Landcare groups in Queensland, Australia and internationally.

Barung Landcare is an established part of the social fabric of the vibrant Maleny community - working tirelessly to ensure the sustainability of the natural resources of the region for the future.

The dedication of Barung's staff and volunteer Management Committees has led the group to:

  • Achieve extensive on-ground works on both public and private lands resulting in greater awareness of local flora and fauna, improved water quality and better environmental practices.
  • Establish a competitive, self-sustaining and educational local native plant nursery providing over 1.5 million local provenance native trees for the local area.
  • Instigate one of the Sunshine Coast's premier tourism events - the Maleny Wood Expo, From Chainsaw to Fine FurnitureTM running for the 11th year in 2006. Soon to return in 2008. It is envisaged that the Wootha Prize will evolve as a major national woodworking competition.
  • Achieve a high standard of environmental extension for local landholders gain community and regional volunteer support valued at well over $250 000 per year.

Volunteering

Volunteering at Barung is an experience in both helping and learning. Barung operates with only a small paid staff, but a large number of volunteers. By being a volunteer you can support Barung's mission in helping the environment, learn about native Australian plants and ecosystems, gain valuable skills in raising native plants from seeds, and meet like-minded people with an interest in maintaining our environment.

We will always welcome Barung members with particular skills who can assist in areas of their expertise, such as office/computer, promotion and marketing, education, and various special projects that Barung runs during the year. Wood Expo: Over 150 volunteers help for the 3 days of the long weekend in May, which is Barung's' major educational and fundraising activity. For enquiries about volunteering for Barung activities, send us an email.
